Rebuilding a 36 steering gear
Hi got a 36 steering gear rebuild kit, and I have a few questions.
1. what's the trick to removing the lower tapered roller bearing race from housing? 2. Do I need anything special to press the roller bearings into the housing? 3. Should I fill the box with grease or gear oil, or STP? If oil what weight? 4. I'm taking the worm gear to be pressed on, as my hand sledge won't do it. Thanks Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk

Re: Rebuilding a 36 steering gear
There are articles on rebuilding these boxes. I think there is one on VanPelt's site. I would use Cornhead grease in the box.

Re: Rebuilding a 36 steering gear
Notice that there is a keyway in the worm/shaft. You must have a driver with a recess to miss the keyway. The worm has the keyway and it fits into the slot in the shaft.

Re: Rebuilding a 36 steering gear
To fit the worm I heat the worm in oil and shrink the shaft in dry ice.
Easy way to remove any bearing race is to run a bead of weld around it, upon cooling the race will shrink and fall out. Obviously you cannot reuse it using this method

Re: Rebuilding a 36 steering gear
use punch trough the 2 holes for lower plate bolts to remove lower race
I used a thick rubber O-ring instead of the cork seal between the housings Are you going to use the original needle bearing system or the aftermarket bushings for sector |

I need to removed and replace the needle bearings. Any suggestions on how best to install the new bearings? Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk
