Identify this Hood Ornament
The '46 Coupe I bought has a Jet Fighter for a hood ornament. Anybody know where these came from and the time frame?

Re: Identify this Hood Ornament
I have one and could not find out much info on it. They are fairly rare and could be purchased from aftermarket suppliers such as Western Auto, PEP Boys ETC. The little I have found out was that it didn't become available until the '50s and was something like $10 or $12 so not many people wanted to spend that kind of money on a car that was several years old. I have several aftermarket dress up hood ornaments for the '46. Two versions of the "Goddess of Speed", one with her arms outstretched, holding a wheel and one version with her arms along side of her. These came in four colors, clear, red, green and blue. I have all but the green. I also have one that looks very much like the Buick, "torpedo" and another that is in the shape of a lightening bolt, in red. At one time I was putting a different one on my car every month or so but stopped doing it. I now keep the Red, "Goddess of Speed" on my car because the red matches the red accents on the '46. If you learn anything about them please post what you learn. Some day I'll get my Daughter In Law to try to figure out how to post pictures and I'll do so.

Re: Identify this Hood Ornament
The old little mags sold some cool aftermarket hood ornaments in the back sales section. Maybe one of those, I'll thumb through some.
Super nice and cool. Last edited by Tinker; 09-06-2018 at 10:08 PM. |

Re: Identify this Hood Ornament
If the pictures work here are a few I have in my showcase. The first two are 46 and they attach to the original base in place of the eight ornament. You can still use the eight ornament with the bullseye ornament. The second picture is a 47-48 hood ornament with the goddess insert installed where the original blue plastic came out. Enjoy, Dale.

There is a member on the barn who goes by "bolts". His avatar on his 48 looks like like one of the photos above.

Re: Identify this Hood Ornament
'51 Looks very similar to the 1953 Ford ornament except yours has a cockpit and larger wing tip tanks shaped like a jet engine minus the large base.

Re: Identify this Hood Ornament
The airplane ornament (only, not with the base) is on Ebay for a very rich $90, considering it is badly pitted.

Re: Identify this Hood Ornament
Anyone have a 50's jc Whitney catalog? I dont think its a Whitney. Thinking it's a later repo?
First image is a whitney ad around mid 50s-early60s. Second if a bull aftermarket hood ornament that I have not been able to place. If someone knows, please share. I've looked. Last edited by Tinker; 09-07-2018 at 10:15 PM. |

Re: Identify this Hood Ornament
If there is the jet plane on E-Bay for $90, as post 14 suggests ( I can't find it ), I would purchase it. I have seen the jet for as high as $500. Don't be confused, as there are several different jet planes out there. The one that 51, and others pictured is the real deal.

Re: Identify this Hood Ornament
There isn't very much info specifically on aftermarket hood ornaments out there. From what I can find, the Jet pictured by 51 and others, was modeled on the Lockheed F94 that first flew in 1949. It wasn't offered until 1951. I saw one in an original box that had a price tag on it for $11.99 which was a lot of money in 1951 to spend on a car that was now 6 years old. I can't find any production numbers on how many were made. As I originally stated I have seen Them as high as $500.
