Default Old engine hoist

Hi Guys
I have an old engine hoist that I'd like to put back in operation. I think the pump is shot, any idea where I can find another one. It's quite simple just a plunger and valve. Next what fluid do you use, I tried ATF but that seems to heavy, but it might be the little valve under the plunger. Might have to buy another cylinder?? Thanks anyway.

Ron:

Would you consider getting it rebuilt? If it's an old US-made one, I'd go that one before I bought an imported one.

Let me know. I know a good guy that does stuff even if you mail it to him.

A couple that I had to deal with were import and the Hydraulic shop had no replacement parts for them. Bought replacement cyl from HF.

Ron I was in the same situation, checked on cost to rebuild$100+
Harbor Freight air over hydraulic $84
Easy decision & works awesome! Air over is the way to fly.
Cheers

When mine went, a friend who was an airline mechanic, fixed it. I don't think he found a"kit", per se, but he was able to source the seals and o-rings, etc. It's still working good after 15 years. I have always used hydraulic jack oil in mine.

Here in Conn., we'd use a guy out in Stafford Springs, Ct. His name was Jack the jack man. Did good work and could fix any jack given to him. I don't know if he's still around. Maybe some of the guys in that area of the state will step in.

CRC/Sta-Lube jack oil is ISO 46 which is near SAE 20. ATF is measure in Kinematic format and is not accurately comparable to SAE or ISO. Temperature changes the ratio to density varies too much. In a basic comparison at summertime ambient temperature it is near SAE 20 but that is about as close as a person can get.

There are many different types and sizes of o-rings. The numbers Parker have cover all sorts of different IDs & ODs but a person has to measure the o-ring grooves for size and fit. Most can be sourced but we almost quit using the old hydraulic types because of the low shelf life. We only purchase the high dollar 20-year types now that are usable with near all fluids. Not all sizes are easily sourced but a person can get them if they are patient. It might just be easier to get a new pump or jack cylinder since the Asian prices are low. I just don't know how long they will last.

I would imagine anyone that rebuilds hydraulic floor jacks could handle the job. When they do it ask for their recommendation on what fluid to use.

AT least if its old and made in an imperial measurement country seals and O rings will be no drama, from my experience in our shop ,any cheap made jacks and lifts were not even a standard metric size, let alone imperial.
strip the unit down and clean it ,fit new seals and O rings, fill it with a 46 grade hydraulic oil and more than likely it will be fine.

That's the guy. Fix a Blackhawk bottle jack for me that was made in the '30's. Works like new.

If it is US made you can probably get it repaired at you local Hyd Jack repair place. If off shore made that brings on more talk and it will most likely have to be replaced. If you can find a kit for it do it your self, there isn't much to them, fairly easy to repair. And if it doesn't work all your out is the price of a repair kit and they don't cost that much.

a cool old hoist deserves a rebuild. it may be cheaper to get a China new cylinder but you would kill any 'cool factor' in the value of a vintage piece of equipment.

Agree 110%. If US-made, fix it if you can and don't give in to a cheaper, off shore unit if can help it.

The pump at the bottom of the cylinder is about 4" long and there is a valve under it that's about 1" long and 1" in diam.. That's all I need. But a new cyl looks pretty nice.

If the cylinder is working fine and the pump part is beyond repair a portapower pump hooked up to the cylinder will work fine to.
The pump has a couple of springs and checkballs in it, if it sat for a while they might be stuck.
If its leaking from pump piston some new o-rings.
