I am assuming you are talking about the single wire from the switch to the distributor ? The way I did that was to take the switch out of the dash and dist.
Look at the back of the switch housing and I used a file to cut away enough material to then pry the back of the housing off. I used a screw driver to pry it open where it was swedged and filed a small amount away to get behind the steel plug and tap it out from the side. Then unsolder the old wire and solder in a new one. I also reused the crimped on fitting at the dist. side and used solder on that end too.

There are links with pictures on here somewhere. I think you have to do a search but I have not been lucky doing that.

Do you have the OVAL or the ROUND speedometer? Each one uses a different popout switch. Here are some pictures of the round speedometer popout ignition I replaced a shorted wire on.

thanks, i have the oval speedometer type. Im thinking of unhooking the speedometer at the transmission and removing the distributor so to have enough slack to pull the instrument panel out far enough to be able to work on it .

You shouldn't have to do either, and if you loosen the head nut, coolant can leak into the cylinder. It's tight, but you should be able to tilt the instrument panel forward and down slightly enough to work on it.
