Need photos or drawings of the complete linkage for a '65 Falcon 170 cid six with the C4 3 speed automatic.
A friend has one and the engine won't idle unless he removes the return spring, which, by the way, is attached to the alternator bracket. I do not believe that to be "correct"

If I remember correctly the spring attached to the front of the "intake manifold" cast into the whole cylinder head.

Here's the thing -

If a high tension return spring was used, it may have put undo pressure on the carb throttle shaft bore and caused it to have become wallowed out.

(A lot of fifty-cent college words here ...

)

This (vacuum leak) will cause a lean condition and upset the fuel trim (too lean) at certain position(s).

Ask him to remove the spring and try to jiggle the throttle shaft while not running. If it moves, that is most likely the problem.

Correct return springs are available.

Maybe spring is pulling throttle shaft to tight, try adjusting idle screw to overcome spring pressure an regain idle . Just a thought.

OK--thanks guys. I will forward than information.
He did install a clone carb--( yeah, I know) He did open it up and check for debris and verified that all the check balls were in place. He knows it is a poor quality carb. The dashpot for the auto trans doesn't screw in properly. He will probably rebuild the oem carb at some point, but thought the clone was a better way to get it running "now".

Kultulz--Yes, I realized that--of course the clone may have that excessive clearance from the factory---you never know.

What I was describing applied only to the original carb. It is a common wear factor.

I have no knowledge of CHI-COM replacements other than I would personally have to be desperate. Kinda like closing time at the LEGION ...

If it turns out to be the carb, knowing which “clone” it was would be of use to the rest of us.

Understood---please understand, it is not my car; not my choice. It really wasn't the first choice for the owner, either. I will say this in his defense---Have you tried to find an original carb in good shape? I have scoured both Carlisle and Hershey the past 2 years without success. The closest I found was a box of disassembled carb parts that the seller wanted $100 for!

There are rebuider outfits that have rebuilt carbs for this. They just won't be at the low swap meet prices. Rebuilt and guaranteed though.
