Default B Distributor Cam

Is a B Distributor Cam the same as the A Distributor Cam?
Thanks, Dave

Nope, Improved profile to give longer dwell, better coil saturation = hotter spark at your plugs.

Enjoy the ride.

I believe all that is available now they the vendors is the 'B' cam because of its different [ better dwell angle] profile.

But they are interchangeable.

If you put in a new B cam, check the finish of the surface.
I put a new one in a few years ago, expecting it to be A OK and it wasn't. The surface was quite rough and wore down the rubbing block of the points in a very short time.
The manufacturers may have improved them by now, it would be wise to check a new one to be sure of it's finish.

One can see the rough finish in this photo:

For those who do not know this:

I see from this photo that the points are REPRO.

Points made for the last several years are too long and do not lineup as seen in the photo.

Berts has two versions of the blocks for sale.

One original and the second one to fix this problem.

A-12160 is original point block for original point sets.
A-12160-B is version for long points.

click here to see both types:

Read description for details.

Here is page for both point sets:

NOTE The new block set will not work with upper plate in the photo because block is not removable in this case.

I put in a new B dist cam a few weeks ago and found it to be sort of smooth, but not what I expected. Had to spend a few minutes with fine paper and emery to get it right.

After that photo was taken I replaced the upper plate w/a new one w/the detachable mount for the stationary point. The points still didn't line up so I filed the holes where the mount attaches to the plate to allow adjustment of the mount. I also smoothed out the surface of the cam.
The original points were still good, other than the worn out rubbing block, so I replaced the rubbing block w/a homemade one.

Bratton's has a very nice machined points block. https://www.brattons.com/machined-di...int-block.html

Even with the modified point block, it still takes some fussin' to get it to fit half-way correctly and have the points close squarely. If these points are going to be made incorrectly forever, then perhaps the vendors might consider making a modified upper plate so that the point block fits correctly. Wallowing out the holes to make the point block fit is not a real good solution. My two cents.....
