Default Source for PPG Concept paint?

Hello,

I need one more quart of PPG DCC-9300 black paint, so I called my usual source, TCP in San Diego. The told me that they have stopped carrying the PPG Concept single-stage paints. Does anyone know of an alternate source for this? I would hate to switch paint for just one front fender...

Thanks,
Doug

I buy my Concept at the local Carquest Auto parts store here in MN. I have heard that CA is mandating water based paints. I suspect soon all states will follow CA's lead and we will all be stuck with water based paint.

I just bought a gallon of DCC-9300 with hardner here in San Diego from a local PPG dealer. They have factory mixed colors such as black but no mixed colors. I was surprised that I could get it from them and was prepared to drive to Phoenix to buy it. They had us sign a statement that we were not a commercial shop but using it for personal use.

Concept is being phased out I understand by PPG. What replaces it I don't know. I have used Restoration Shop single stage urethane from AutoColorLibrary on several cars including two model As. Much cheaper that is for sure!

Thanks for the leads.
I used TCP's "Restoration Shop" products when I painted my Triumph Spitfire a couple of years ago, and I was happy with them. But my "A" is already 80% painted with Concept, and I wouldn't want to see a color mismatch on it.

TCP can match your paint.

I can understand your desire to finish with the same black you started using. A few years ago there was quite a discussion of what black was really black enough. What tints were used to make the black.

I have read about Concept being discontinued for about 4 years now. You really need to find all you need ASAP. See Brents post below

I have used both TCP product an PPG Concept. There is definitely a difference in quality of both products. Concept sprays out better with less coats needed. TCP needs more coats to cover. Concept sets up faster and is definitely more durable after it is dry.

One thing I noticed about the TCP house brand paint: I needed to thin it a bit, even though it was supposed to be ready to spray. I probably used about 4:1 paint/thinner, plus the catalyst.

As of about a month ago, my PPG rep told me there were not immediate plans to drop the DCCline however at some point there would be lines that will replace it as far as popularity. The reason the DCC is so expensive is because there are heavy metals in the pigments that drive up the costs. I would have no problem buying paint from my jobber and shipping it to someone.

I had to drive down to Jackson California Amador County to buy some PPG DMC 921 black because they can no longer sell in EL Dorado county same paint store . I think the price has gone up also $ 113 .88 for a quart and $ 46.60 for 8 OZ DCX61 High Solids Urethane hardener . I needed some primer also $ 66.75 for a quart of DP50LF plus catalyst $ 38.45 and a gallon of reducer $ 65.40 Total $ 357.57 with tax OUCH .
