Default Brake/Clutch Retractor Springs

1946 Super Deluxe

I need some help figuring out how to attach the retractor springs. The car didn’t have a brake spring when I bought it, so nothing to go on there. The clutch spring was in place and I have replaced it as I found it, but it doesn’t retract the clutch arm when I push it down - if I pull it back over the hump it will finish the job, but I don’t think that’s the way it should work!

I purchased new springs (99A-7523; 7.6” per the Green Book). The 7.6” spring on the clutch is just a bit too long to do anything. And I can’t even find any place to hook a 7.6” spring on the brake side. So, I don’t know if the springs are not correct or if I’m really missing something else.

I’m attaching a few pictures and would appreciate any advise.

I don't know the answer to your spring question but, the clevis pin shown appears to have a too loose fit judging from the angle.

Mr. Bidwell ....Attached is a picture of a 1939 Ford pedal assembly, but you may find some similarities. Back then, Ford liked to attach the 'OTHER' end of those springs in small-diameter holes punched in the chassis rails. You may look at your chassis and find similar holes in the appropriate locations.

And like "19Fordy" mentioned in his post above, that shiny clevis pin in that clutch pedal appears to be too small in diameter, allowing it to fit 'skewed' (2nd picture).

Check chassis parts book for a small bracket that is attached to transmission to engine block bolt. Photos were posted here on fordbarn.com so a search can result in some answers.

Thanks 19Fordy, V8Coopman and Terry, OH!

I found a photo that shows the bracket/tab for the brake spring - not sure if it attaches to the transmission to block bolt or the oil pan bolt, but at least I have some direction. So, now I just need to find or make the bracket.

I do have the original cotter pins, so maybe swapping it out with the new one will tighten up angle and maybe fix the lack of return on the clutch side.

Appreciate all the feedback!

Place one or two flat washers against the side of the bracket where your cotter pin fits BEFORE you reinstall the cotter pin. This may reduce the "slack angle" of the cleveis pin.

You might also want to check the dia. of the clevis pin and compare it to the holes into which it fits to see if there is excessive wear of the pin or an enlargement of the holes. Also use the thickest cotter pin you can fit into the hole.

On the 47 the clutch spring is attached to a small tab with a hole for the spring in a hole for a 3/8”bolt. This goes on the rear most bolt on the engine block/pan joint.
