Thinking Of Our Ol' Buddy
Got an email from a friend today with a link to this year's Grand National Roadster Show pictures. Lots of pics and look what was in the bunch. Our ol' buddy Paul Howard's, av8paul, shiny black roadster. Paul got to check off one of his bucket list items before his sudden passing. Something to think about when you're putting off doing something with family, friends, or that old Ford in the garage.

Re: Thinking Of Our Ol' Buddy
I have about the same photo of Paul's car, taken at the GNRS. I wanted to meet him, but never saw him around his car. I'm so pleased to hear that his grandson will be getting the car. Is he driving age? It's neat that it will stay in the family.

Re: Thinking Of Our Ol' Buddy
That's only fitting! Nearly every photo included his grandson sitting in the seat with him. I'm glad to hear it will be his some day.

I was fortunate to meet Paul for the first time and take a pic of his roadster at the GNRS. True gentleman...

Re: Thinking Of Our Ol' Buddy
Paul will be missed on the Salt this year.
I won't be surprised if there's a nice ceremony in his honor.

Re: Thinking Of Our Ol' Buddy
Didn't know Paul, but I knew pleanty like him.
Like the Greatest Generation of WW2, we are loosing all our "Cool Dudes" from the past. These were the guys I looked up to for rodding, how to treat people, and how to have general fun. I had to laugh, as a friend of my mentioned at the Back to the 50's weekend in Minneapolis/St Paul, he was talking to an "old guy" I laughed. Arent they all old guys? I know, depends on your definition of "old". I guess in 15 years I will be the "old guy" and I will always try to live up to the standards set by guys like Paul. 23rd Psalm |

Re: Thinking Of Our Ol' Buddy
Was looking through the B-Ville pics today and who should come to mind but our ol' buddy Paul and his trip to the salt with the Rolling Bones crew. The thing I remember most is how long he said it took him to get all the salt out of the cracks and crevices, but I'm sure he thought it was worth it.

Re: Thinking Of Our Ol' Buddy
For those who did not see it - there was a really nice interview with Paul on the DVD V8 Video "Sweet Sickness" you can tell from the way Paul shared his stories and the way he laughed that he was a really nice guy with lots of knowledge he was willing to share. (PS - I have no financial interest or any other interest in promoting the video - if you have interest you can goggle it I'm sure)

Re: Thinking Of Our Ol' Buddy
Paul stopped by my place once not too long before his big trip west. He told me that he was doing a LOT of house work. Gave him some parts for his panel truck column shifter and talked about his roadster. One of the things I asked him was how a guy as tall as he was fit into an A roadster. He told me that when he first gets in, it's kind of uncomfortable, but, then the adrenalin takes over and it's OK. Truly an inspirational guy.

Re: Thinking Of Our Ol' Buddy
I had had a conversation with Paul, maybe two years before his passing, about possibly joining up with him and the Rolling Bones on a future driving trek to the Salt Flats. Paul told me to start making plans at that point or it may never happen. I talked to the Rolling Bones group at Bonneville last week about joining in with them on a future trip.
I have pictures saved in my computer files somewhere of Paul on the Salt and also some of his grandson sitting in his roadster at his home. I know his grandson liked to travel in that roadster with Paul and I can only imagine how proud Paul must have been to have his grandson riding with him. This only emphasizes to me how important it is to cherish every day we are given and also IMHO we should not hesitate to get out and drive these old Fords whenever possible. I am also glad to hear that Paul's grandson will get his roadster.
