Default Cancelling a vintage plate reg. in NY

Has anyone here had experience with cancelling a vintage plate (year of manufacture) registration with the New York DMV? You wouldn't be surrendering these plates, so the PD-7 plate surrender form used for regular registrations doesn't seem to fit the situation. Appreciate any guidance you guys can provide.

When I lived in Ny I had vintage tags to match the years of my cars. When time came to take them off the road I simply went to the DMV and told them I wanted to keep my 1919 and 1923 tags and they just cancelled registration and let me keep the tags

Thanks WillC. I had submitted an online question to the NYDMV about 10 days ago asking about the process, and hadn't heard back. That is, until this morning finally. They confirmed what you said. Bring the plates to the local DMV office just to show them they're off the car, and request the reg be cancelled. You "store" (their word) the plates yourself, and they'll issue the FS6T form the insurance company wants before they'll issue a new policy in the new state I'm moving to.
