Default Is this junk

Got the crank cleaned up and noticed some damage around the hole on the rod journal. Quick measurement says rods have been turned 10 and mains 20. No cracks in the block so that's a plus. The guy I got the crank from will give me another one but I need to disassemble it.

Clean it up, chamfer the damage around the oil hole, and you will be good to go as long as there is not a crack somewhere.

Is is a Ford or Merc. crank? Ford cranks are a dime a dozen, so it may pay to look for a better one, but I agree with Russ. Clean up the hole, machine it and run it if you'd like.

A guy at Hershey has a huge spot. Something around 8 spots. He had a tent that covered six of them. At each pole, he had a Ford crank tied to the rope. I asked him about his interesting choice of wind weights and he replied, "What else am I going to do with them?"

I got a good laugh from that.

Also depends what it will clean up at. Looks like it might take a good bit of grinding.

Sorry it is a merc crank. This is going to be somewhat stock just trying to do it the right way.

Do they all look like that one? Worst case you can have it spray welded and then turned.

I wouldn't worry about the oil feed bores as much as whether it will clean up at .030" under. You can chamfer the oil ports a good bit and not hurt function at all.

You can just chamfer the oil hole - heck, we do that with all our racing cranks anyway. Obviously it will need a regrind, but going to 20 on the rods should not be a big deal and getting to 30 on the mains - can still get bearings, so you should be good to go.

If it was mine, I'd remove the knock-in soft plugs on the rod throws and tap them for a threaded Allen plug - is the best way to go (don't have to worry about soft plugs getting blown out). Best of luck!

My bet is that the damage was done before the crank was reground...so it has be run and worked as is...

It could also be welded by the crank grinder and reground. Not junk Below is a photo of a drive shaft being welded on a crankshaft welder.

Too pitted for my liking. Especially in the seal area. Going to ask for another. Thanks for the help.

I wonder how that happened. I tore a Merc. Engine apart that sat outside for years and the only part of the engine that wasn't rusted was the crank. Needed only turned .010. The rest including the block was junk.

Don't trash it. Someone, sometime will be able to use it, since it's a Merc.

It might still work for floaters if a person wanted a 4" crank in an older engine.

Looks like a porous casting. I'll take it and run floaters. It would make a nice warmed up 99T.

That one looks pretty shitty to my one blind eye.

New project is to bust open the next candidate.

Bless the Flathead Gods that you will have impressive horsepower.
