Default A little torque tube tech

There have been some threads about replacing the center bearing. I needed to remove one. If you have not done this here are some ideas.

I have Skip Haney’s instructions, but you have to work a little harder than it seems. He says use 1 1/2” pipe. I bought some and and it would not fit through the transmission end. I think he meant 1 1/2” od pipe which is 1 1/4” pipe size.
That is what I used

You need a 42” piece. To keep it centered I made a plug to center on the bearing.

The next step after removing sleave and seal is to pound it out. I marked where it was so I coild tell if it moved.

I put it on a piece of plywood and used my engineers hammer as hard as I could.
It did not budge. I got a heavy sledge hammer I use for fence posts. After some heavy licks it finally started to move and then came out.

Second picture is a section of a torque tube that I had for reference.

Often wondered how to go about doing that...or what the bearing looked like?

Gee, you're bearing looks pretty good.Gear oil in the torque tube had dissolved the rubber around my bearing 1st photo. 2nd photo is NOS bearing. 3rd photo shows the old bare bearing that is now used as a paper weight. Last photo is the tool I made to remove and install the new bearing. While you've got it all apart install a new bearing seal at front of torque tube and use kit below for clamshell. Fill clam shell with corn head grease. Hope it all goes well.
