Transmission "Grind"
I'm pretty new to owning stock Model A's. So I'm not sure how common my inquiry is, but...
I was wondering if Transmission "grinding" if perfectly normal on my '29 Tudor Sedan? When at a dead-stop, I go to put it in 1st gear and it grinds. When I'm driving it grinds into 2nd and sometimes 3rd. It doesn't seem to grind in reverse. I realize the car is old, but maybe there is an adjusment somewhere that I can make? Oh... If I'm at a dead-stop, sometimes I'll put it in 2nd (grinds), but then drop it into 1st (no grind). Thanks for the help! -Jeremy

Re: Transmission "Grind"
Check the gear grease to make sure it is the 600 wt thick oil. Anything less will cause the gears to grind more than usual.

Re: Transmission "Grind"
Good suggestion about the thickness of the oil. Also, you mentioned that you live in SoCal where there are many Model Aers. If you give a more precise area, probably someone would be willing to meet you and give a demo on driving/shifting. A few minutes face to face you'll learn far more than you ever could trying to understand it here. Armed with that start you can really have fun expanding you abilities doing higher speed downshifts, etc. Part of the fun of driving an 80 year old car! Joining most local Model A clubs also a great way to find a wealth of info on all aspects of your car. You might even meet some nice people that share your interest although can't guarantee that!

Re: Transmission "Grind"
Do you understand how to "double clutch" when you shift? If not, that is your problem. If you narrow down So. Cal. there is probably someone nearby willing to show you.

Re: Transmission "Grind"
Wow! Thanks for the quick response!
Like I said, this is my first time with stockers (I've got 2 Hot Rods). I totally dig driving the stock sedan and plan on keeping it stock! The pedal, to me, seems pretty tight with not a lot of free play. I don't know if this adjustment has been made? I will look further into it. Quote:
Thanks Again! -Jeremy

Re: Transmission "Grind"
Recently, of car collector friend offered to let me drive his 2010 Dodge Viper.
Force of habit had me double-clutching this amazing vehicle until I realized I didn't have to. |
