Default Starter Amperage

I am looking for the amperage on a good starter on 6V positive ground. Head is a 5.5 Snyder's. I did a search, but could not find anything.

I measured it on my stock head and it's 100 amps. Because the engine is relatively slow cranking the amp meter needle swings back and forth as the starter pushes each piston through it's compression stroke, so you have to average the swings and it comes out about 100 amps. I'd guess the 5.5 head could boost it by another 15 or 20 amps.

For sure the amperage is related to temperature of the engine too

I use a 5.5 and 6volt on positive ground, but never measured amperage.

My (as any) Optima is capable to provide 1000A at 0`Celsius
I dont know about `F , but 0`C is about freezing point of water

Does starting process sound "tired", or why do you want to measure?
It shouldnt sound tired with a 5.5

I want to replace the existing "2" gauge ground wires going to the disconnect switch with something that will carry more current. Currently the starter is very lazy. However, when I hook directly with an original ground strap straight to the battery the starter is quite lively.

I think your idea is a good one. 6v does not like light wire and needs good clean connections.

What I have in my notes ---from old electric rebuilding and spec books
cranking --145-165 amps at 5.1 volts (depending on temp, and oil)

on the bench no load -- 2700 rpm, 6 volts, 50 amps

14 ft lbs 0 rpm, 3.75 volts 560 amps (locked test)

On any car I work on if I see modifications from stock I start my search for the problem with the modifications ---many times it makes for a quick fix

check for bad ground. Don't run the ground to a painted/rusted frame. Run it to a bell housing or flywheel housing bolt
