Question 1929 Coupe

Approaching my driverway downhill about 50 yards out. Shifted down. Of a sudden horrendous clatter and engine died. Pushed in clutch and coasted into driveway. Attempted restart and engine runs with rattle at rear of engine. Removed plugs and turned engine over using starter. In neutral with clutch out still a clatter. Clutch in same result. Pulled starter and all appeared well. Opened bell housing inspection port and found two pieces of a destroyed bendix spring in the bottom. The bendix on my starter is intact. The previous owner who has passed on must have had a broken spring and all the pieces were not removed. I removed the two pieces I could see. Reassembled all and tried the motor. Again it will start but something is rubbing that I can't see. I believe I am going to have to look at the clutch assembly to see if I bent something or have more spring parts jammed up somewhere. Any other ideas? Easier to remove engine or rear differential?

The only broken parts I have found so far are the two pieces of bendix spring.
