Steering column lengths
My dad has 3 steering columns for the 2 tooth gemmer box but I don't have the steering shaft. One has the flat spots with grooves at the top, no box on the bottom and is 35 3/4 inch long tube and a clamp on the end with a groove cut in the tube length wise about 3 inches from the bottom up.
How do I identify a 1929 2 tooth steering column? I have found where they started using them in 1929 but the column had some differences between 1929 and 1930. Last edited by rkmiller; 02-27-2020 at 08:21 PM. |

Re: Steering column lengths
Look in one of the major suppliers catalogs. They sell five different length horn rods. Translate this to the steering shaft that you need.

Re: Steering column lengths
Thanks, but I already checked that and the horn rod is longer than the steering column tube.
I will try to get photos posted if that helps. |

Re: Steering column lengths
Thanks Bob!
Yes the steering column is like the 29 version, but doesn't have a gear box welded at the bottom. I am reasonably certain it is the 29 gemmer steering column for the 2 tooth gear. I will take to a guy in Wichita that rebuilds steering columns. My dad says the 2 tooth is a better gear box and easier to adjust so I figured since my project is a late 1929 it would be best to go with that. |

Re: Steering column lengths
Thanks for the help guys!
My dad is an old Model A person and tinkering with them since the early 60's, I used to help him when I was a kid, but was more into 67 Mustangs and Willy's Jeeps so I don't remember much of what he was trying to teach me back in the 80's. Now that I have this basket case 1929 he "gave" me I am learning a lot. |
