Fuel pump
I am looking to change my 53 flathead v/8 to an electric pump. What do you suggest and what do I look out for. Do I go thru the mechanical pump or remove it? What about the pushrods?

Re: Fuel pump
Sorta up to you. If you do go through the mech. pump you need to modify it so a failure won't pump fuel into the block. You can leave the rod in.

Re: Fuel pump
I installed an Airtex fuel pump, Part No. E8902. Installed it close to the fuel tank. I only use as necessary and left the mechanical as is.

Re: Fuel pump
I have done this to a number of our antique vehicles, both 6 and 12 volt, Ford and non Ford. As mentioned previously, I modify the OEM fuel pump, making it a pass through (I detailed the modification on my thread "What I did on my Lunch Hour") and I leave the pushrod in. This way the Airtex pump and fuel pressure regulator (set at 2.5 lbs.) become the full time fuel delivery system.

Re: Fuel pump
If you mount your electric pump to the cross member, I would suggest that you insulate the mounting bracket on the pump from the metal of the cross member with some sort of a hard rubber pad or washer. Much quieter!

Re: Fuel pump
I mounted mine on the frame rail. Can not hear it run in the car. It's an Airtex.

Re: Fuel pump
I mounted mine between the crossmember and fuel tank complete with regulator and liquid filled gauge. Pumped thru the stock pump. I use a three way toggle to energize the pump. In one position the electric only works when I hit the start button, one position is full on and one is off!

Re: Fuel pump
As noted on another thread, don't forget an inertia switch.
