Re: glass setting tape
setting tape will not work on the windshield, it takes a molded rubber for that, call macs or steele , most parts suppliers will carry the windshield rubber

Re: glass setting tape
I would like to know, also, what tape to use...
There is also a gasket, that goes around the outside of the frame that Ford3 is referring to... Karl |

He said he was changing the glass. Then he needs glass bedding (setting) tape. That tape is for setting glass in the windshield frame. Ford3, I believe you are talking about the rubber weather strip seal for the pop out windshield. I don't think the OP is talking about that. Here is how I did it. I put the bedding tape around the glass and cut careful "pie" cuts. I then taped the bedding tape to the windshield glass with electrical tape. Using soapy water I installed the glass in the bottom of the windshield frame. I then carefully attached the top portion of the frame on the glass. After it was all together, I cut off the excess glass "setting" tape. Mine turned out good. After this work was done, I installed the windshield weather strip from Bob Drake's. To determine what size tape you need, you need to remove the old glass from the windshield frame and then thoroughly clean out the groove that the glass goes into. Measure the width of the glass. Then measure the width of the groove in the frame. Subtract the glass dimension from the groove dimension. Then divide that number by two. That will give you the glass bedding tape thickness you need. But be careful, It took two tries to get the correct size tape. And be careful not force things and break the glass. Good luck. Re: glass setting tape
Nice little fixture there Tony, good thinking! Don't quote me on this, [I could be wrong; have been before- ask my wife], but I believe that instead of using soapy water to aid in assembling it all together, one is supposed to use engine oil. The oil ultimately swells the rubber and causes it to sorta vulcanise and 'set' the windscreen into the frame. Hence the name 'setting tape'.
Like I say, that is probably not quite correct, but I am sure some more knowledgeable member will correct this.

They also make 1/32 and 3/32 thick, and prolly more sizes. I have not seen a cloth side to setting tape, Could you post a photo of the 'Cloth Side" of setting tape you mention......thanks .

Re: glass setting tape
Kerosene works very well on glass setting tape.
Paint some into the frame groove and then put some on a rag and wipe it onto the tape and it will slide into the groove. |
