modela axle keyway
Are there different width keyways on the axles? Im swapping rear ends and noticed key was too narrow for key way.

Re: modela axle keyway
Some keyways have been worn wider from running the taper with oil on it, or the nut not tight enough.

Re: modela axle keyway
If it isn't too bad, I would be sure the taper is clean, dry, and smooth, then properly tighten the nut and drive the car.

Re: modela axle keyway
Been out of the Model A restorations for a while now. Does anyone still offer "step keys?" Wider at the bottom to fit oversize axle keyways and standard size to fit the drums.
A good machine shop could make some from key stock and a vertical mill.

Then use a fairly large pin punch, perhaps 1/4" and a large hammer and "pein" the shoulder of the axle keyslot. Work to either side to "even-out" and center the key in the slot. Start at the big taper and work your way down to the small. You may want to move the c clamp along too. Doesn't have to be perfect. And when I go back together, I bathe everything in Green Loctite (DON'T USE RED) and put it together quickly - and to a final 130 ft-lbs. (torque to 90 then to 130 minimum two steps.) Drive it for a trip to get ice cream and then re-torque to 130. Drive it a week and then re-torque to 130 - or even to 150. Joe K
