Default Shift knob info

Stock Model A shift rod is threaded 5/16-24. Many (but not all) of the current shift knobs are 16mm x 1.5 . In order to get one of these new knobs to fit the Model A a metal plug/adapter that threads into both is needed. Do a search on Ebay for "5/16-24 to 16mm x 1.5 Custom Shift Knob Adapter" to find such an adapter - around $7 or $20 on Amazon for the same thing.

Unless you are installing a custom knob, get a knob from the A parts suppliers.

I'm gonna assume he doesn't like the ones they have, otherwise he'd be doing that.

Sad but true story, I had a custom knob made that had the shift pattern on it. I just could not remember it for some reason.

Are you sure that they are 16 mm? 16mm is very close to 5/8".

I needed a custom shift knob that showed the shift pattern so my wife (75) could drive our Coupe - thinking others may have a similar need is reason for the post. I personally prefer the original but in deference to her I made the change without thinking twice.

Where did you have your custom knob made?

I wonder if I can make one on my 3-d printer, if I start with a nut...

I did a Google search for Ford model a shift knob. One of the many custom knobs came up with the shift pattern on it. The size of the thread as listed for the knob was 16mmx1.5. In looking for that knob I perused a bunch of other ones most of which were listed as being this size. Once I found what I was looking for the next challenge was figuring out figment. There are a number of businesses that offer inserts, which are designed to fit both ends - knob & shifter. The Model A stock sifter is an uncommon (for today’s cars) size. I was pleasantly surprised to find an insert that works.

That is why they sell the reducer bushings. They make them so one size fits all.
