Default Timing

On a 59A engine, should the timing on the distributor be in the middle, or above or below the middle, to help run cool

I'm confused - this happens frequently.

The middle of what?

Has your engine had a legit TDC mark and pointer added and verified correct? If not all you can do is play with it and guess.
Typically a correctly setup distributor bolt it on and go. Anything more you need above stated timing make/pointer.
