The factory did some repairs by hardchroming, I have a cam that the #3 bearing surface is hardchromed, and have seen another with #3, and one with #2 hardchromed

Yes, it was quite common in the old days but you can thank the EPA for running the price of hard chroming up now to where many other ways are cheaper.
