Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
Mark - Try 48-6044 Rod, engine radius for 60 and 90HP, 8 cyl, 1935-1941. There are similar rods shown for 1933 through 1941 for both 4 and 8 cylinder applications. Check page 208 and 216 in the "Green Bible". Hope this helps.

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
No idea if they were the same length. I suppose it would depend on the frame and that's borne out by the '35 - '41 taking the same P/N. I suspect the COE trucks were all the same as the wheelbase length difference was all behind the cab/transmission.
I also just learned I can't type. I meant to write 208 & 226 not 208 & 216. Sheesh.

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
It's 46-6044 for the '33-'34 four-cylinder rod, not 48-6044 and no, they are not all the same length.

I would not make a good accountant! Anyone know where to find the length specifications? I'll add them for the Barn. I could not find them in the V-8 Times. Henry, I guess it's my eyes and fingers that need to get coorinated. :-) Mark |

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
The '35 to '41 V8 engine steady rods that I have measure ~ 14" to 15" long. I also have a set of steady rods that are ~ 22" to 23" long. I am not exactly sure what these longer rods actually fit. Would be nice to find some accurate information listing all the part numbers, specific details on their configuration, and exactly where they are all used.

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
John, those longer rods probably fit cars where the rods were mounted forward on the front member.

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
I believe the engine stay rods were no longer needed when the rear mount changed and that prevented the rear end from pushing the trans and engine forward.

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
Since we're on the subject, my '41 pickup is missing them and am I correct that they mounted in the "X" frame top dimpled holes just forward of the trans mount?

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
This may have been posted before but here is the aftermarket anti-chatter rod that was available for 1946-48 Fords. Also fits 1939-41. Not sure if FORD made these but this does have the little Ford wire tag on it.

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
This is an ancient thread, but it doesn't get to my question.
I have a '32. The rods go between the K-member and the back of the block. The rods have an as-manufactured length,of course. Did the factory mess with the effective length or not? Depending on construction of the frame and the machining of the block, using them as manufactured might introduce a twist in the engine/transmission assembly. Thoughts>? |

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
The '32 Service Bulletins specify using shims to prevent distortion.

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
My '47 sedan coupe has them. They are long straight rods bolted to the same front cross member where the front engine mounts are attached - as shown in VCOOPMAN's post above. The car came from CA and evidently a former owner had them installed.
Regarding deuce_roadster's comment, my '47 does have the stock tranny mount/support on the cross member there. That tranny mount indeed prevents forward/backward shifting of the tranny and engine. However, the tranny mount (loosely) strattles the cross member which MIGHT allow some minor rotational movement of the tranny/engine. |

Re: Motor Stay Rods (anti-chatter rods)
DavidG, as usual, comes up with an answer that is on point. However, DavidG, what amounts to distortion? And how do you measure that?
