HI All,
Were Cowl lights fitted to 33 cars ? if so, what is the difference between 33 and 34 Cowl lights ? |

Yes 33 deluxe cars had them.As far as I know the are the same for both years. There were holes just above the reveal in front of the windshield post.Look underneath and you should see indications. If your car is a standard I personally would leave it that way.Standard phaetons have low production numbers.

Re: Cowl Lights on 33 vs 34
Standard item on deluxe cars . Extra cost on std cars . There are slight differences in body depth on 33-34 cowllights but this seems to be inconsistent so it may well be just different suppliers . Headlights are a different story with 33 NOTICEABLY deeper than 34 . As your car has holes for them I'd use-em . Besides they aren't expensive or hard to find . What's on your car is not the proper ones .

Re: Cowl Lights on 33 vs 34
I have original '33 cowl lights on my '33 and they are more bullet shaped than the '34's to mimmick the shape of the '33 headlights. It's a minor enough difference that you have to be aware of it to notice it. Bill

Re: Cowl Lights on 33 vs 34
I second DavidJ's comment. Of the six each '33 and '34s that I've owned with cowl lamps, there was no consistent difference of the depth of the cowl lamps, even though I attempted to find one. Further, Ford's engineering release documents make no mention of a dimensional change in the cowl lamp housings, unlike the notable change in the depth of the headlamp housings.
P.S. ceejay, Please promise not to replace those Marchal Optique head lamps with typical '33-'34 headlamps; they are the vastly superior in appearance (and were used by Ford in some European jurisidictions). David |

Re: Cowl Lights on 33 vs 34
DavidG, wow, There I was thinking someone had fitted some cheap crappy lamps into the original 33 housings.... the chrome housings have the word ford (and something else) stamped on them and they are very deep... I will take photo and post.
So those Marchal lamps are probably original to the car ?? The glass on those bulge out a LOT compared to the relatively flat glass of the typical 33/34 units. David, I am waiting for your e-mail when ever you can find the time |

I've got both the deep and shallow cowl light. I've collected many 33-34 lights through the years and the deeper ones are definitely very hard to find.

Re: Cowl Lights on 33 vs 34
If this is the gauge of knowledge on 33-34 cowl lights this is one drawer of these . I have more . No I don't want to part with any and I am always looking for more with PRODUCTION LENSES . THATS the difficult part with these little fellas . The two on the left in the rear row show the longest and the shortest BUT there are FOUR different depths in the back row alone . As I stated above there isn't really any consistencey to this . A question for the cowl light guru's here . Do any of you know the 4 digit number that is on PRODUCTION lenses ?

DAVID J. .....................
I'm learning something here. I had always ASSUMED that the 1933s were longer than the 1934s. I had no idea that there were several different lengths ! MIKE Last edited by FL&WVMIKE; 11-08-2012 at 10:40 PM. |

David,
That's consistent with my experience. Finding two exactly the same depth is something of a challenge. David |
