Default Bendix Spring Snapped...Normal?

So the attached photo is my Bendix Spring. I ordered a new USA made set up from Synder's. Any thoughts? I think it backfired on starting, would that crack it, or just wear and old age?

It's probably 20 years of service. I have another question, if the bolt goes through the shaft why have key? Seems the bolt would hold everything where it belongs without the key. Just curious. I took it apart (my first one) a few hours so maybe I'm forgetting what I saw. Thanks.

Think of how many times you have started the car in twenty years. I think you got your service out of it.

Hawk,
I have fitted 12 batteries in my 28 Pickup as well as in my 29 Chevy. The extra oomph causes the starter to kick in with a hell of a jolt. In the past five years or so, I have had a few broken springs on the Chevy and the Model A. I have also had one where the bolts securing the spring, have come loose. I now fit them with locktite and make double sure that the lockplates are secure.

12 batteries. No wonder some springs broke. I have broken them with one 6V battery.

You are correct Davey,
6 Volt batteries are very hard to come by in Africa.
Cheers

When putting the new spring on make sure you use the special washers under the bolts.

That's the first one I've seen/heard of where the bolt goes right through the shaft.

Mine broke from back firing soon after I got the car. Learning curve of starting a Model A. For sure get the new washers with the bend over tab!!!!

My suggestion is to install the modern Bendix that most suppliers offer. Especially if you are operating a 6-volt starter on 12-volts.

Ditto. I converted my 6v stater to 12v and it still hits hard. Go with the modern Bendix. I have never had a problem.

Broken bendix spring with a 12 volt battery can be expected. No surprise at all.

I am surprised no one mentioned retarding the spark before hitting the starter. Does this imply that 12 volts make the engine kicking back a thing of the past. And only with 6 volts? I h ave done that!

6 or 12 volts... No difference on spark advance. Always retard on start-up.

Besides breaking The Bendix spring , failure to retard the spark when cranking can bend the armature shaft .

Re the bolt going thru the shaft out the other side, farmer fix for stripped threads or missing key? Don't know/think you if could even use a modern bendix on that shaft. ?
Not a recommendation just posting to show it mounted.

The the retaining bolt and washer are installed the spring is left a some movement. The bolt is turned tight then back off to the first flat before the tab is bent up. In this case that bolt that goes all the way thru may have been way to tight. At this point I think that you would need a replacement armature as the hole is now over sized. Is the key in place?
