Flathead Friday: 33 coupe motor pull. Crusty head swap.

Hello. Welcome to yet another scintillating video from Mart's Garage. It's time to bite the bullet and yank the motor out of my 1933 Ford 5 window coupe. It's going to get the Crusty Flatty. I got the new heads for the Crusty Flatty from my mate Glen. Many thanks Glen. I put them on but do a clearance check first, as they had been skimmed.
Once again, this was plagued by technical problems, including first of all a complete microphone failure, then a unsatisfactory fix. I lost a lot of footage on the motor teardown and radiator removal. I did the best I could with what I had. You can use the closed captions on the part where the audio volume is low. They kinda work.

I always mill my head to give .045/.050" piston to head clearance. This doesn't raise the CR very much, but causes a high degree of turbulance in the chamber, by increasing the "Squich" areas. I measure the clearance by using small alum balls made from alum foil and stuck on the pisto and valve with alittle grease. It's more accurate than clay.. If the piston is hitting the head you can increase the clearance with a dremmel tool. The end result is better throttle response an economy.

Hi Ron, glad you took the time to watch my video. I always heed your advice. I do not have a mill big enough to skim my heads. If I did have, I'd be doing exactly what you've been preaching. With these red ones, I just had to use them, so it was a case of like it or lump it. I guess some sort of skim is better than no skim, though.

I wanted to leave the other engine relatively intact. Plus that crank had a repair done back in the day and it is non stock where the pulley bolts on.

The green heads had some heavy pitting in one of the combustion chambers.

The 32 body in the corner is a 2 door sedan. Who knows? I might get around to getting it built one day.

As far as “A’s” and “32’s” go, I think the Tudor Sedans are the best body style. Where I live you need a roof and a heater ten months a year and the extra room would be handy...Mark
