Default Odd VIN

A buddy is buying a 28 Coupe from a dealer here in California. He discovered his dealer paperwork does not match the car engine number. He has not seen the title yet. There is no evidence of a state issued VIN. The VIN is SCDHPTxxxxxx (xxxxxx are numbers). Does anyone recognize the prefix letters in this VIN? This really needs to be straightened out before finalizing the deal.

Thanks,

Dan

Thinking that SCDHPT has something to do with South Carolina DOT. The XXXXXX maybe the original engine number it was registered with in SC and later transferred to be registered in CA. Basically, he’d be registering a vehicle with no real physical vin or engine number to match the paperwork.

He might end up with an Assigned VIN from the CHP.

Does the car have an ID plate attached anywhere? Likely an assigned number but if so you'd think the owner would've stamped an ID plate or put the number somewhere on the car. The engine number was originally the same as the car VIN, but when engines are changed out most people don't restamp them to match the VIN. Look elsewhere on the car. The original VIN is on the frame, but have to lift the body to see it. If all checks out OK, and the VIN is verified, I'd make sure the car has it stamped permanently.
