Question about Shifter and E-brake boot's
Hello All,
After replacing my re-pop boot's A-7000-GB and A-7000-EB just shy of 2 years and they are already cracking. The Shifter has cracks around the shifter and at the top radius. The E-brake boot is splitting everywhere and starting to disintegrate. My car came with a black leather E-brake boot that was dry, stiff and crispy so I replaced it and stored it in case I wanted to make another and use this one as a pattern . My Shifter never had a boot. When I bought the 2 re-pop's I also bought the metal bezels A-7001-GB and A-7001-EB that go with them but they overlap one another. My question is: What material were the original boot's made from and how do you use the two bezels together? Regard Bill |

Re: Question about Shifter and E-brake boot's
None were provided by the factory (for the '30-31's) as seen in factory photos.

Re: Question about Shifter and E-brake boot's
The Instruction Books show no boots with one exception - the 1928 second version (used February - May) shows a boot on the left-side hand brake.

Re: Question about Shifter and E-brake boot's
If there are no boots in the 30-31 and you want to keep it stock then disregard this. However, if you're like me and don't like them unbooted may I suggest the modification and the use of modern front axle boots. I can't give a make a model to choose from, you''ll have to find it your self. Now before you start laughing at my crazy idea. Think about the punishment the the rubber in an axle boot has to take. It's far more than a normal shift lever boot. Those thing crack and crumble away in months. The axle boots stay together with flexing thousands of times a minute.

That's a fantastic idea, but I thought I was going for the original look, but apparently No boot's is the stock configuration. The previous owner did a decent job installing the carpet kit, but the shifter and e-brake could have been done tighter. I'm afraid I'll need the boot's. I wonder if I should just keep buying the cheap rubber ones the parts houses carry or if I should bust out my sewing machine and make some leather ones that fit nice? Does anyone know when the boot's start coming in and what material were they made from? Regards Bill |

Re: Question about Shifter and E-brake boot's
The reproduction ones are very thin and flimsy. The original accessory ones were thicker and more well made. Can't think of a solution, but Terry's idea sounds like a good one.

Re: Question about Shifter and E-brake boot's
I put a boot on mine because the carpet was getting dirty from the shift tower.

Re: Question about Shifter and E-brake boot's
My car isn't always under cover and does get some sun. The cracking was evident but not as visually as it is now. I had accidentally left the boot's sitting outside for a month in direct sunlight and they were toast. Southern California high desert sun, heat and dryness, is great for no rusting part's, but it's also pretty unforgiving to rubber. If you don't drive much, you'll replace your tires from dry and cracking rubber more often than from wear itself.
I am sure of one thing, ... there are NO UV inhibitor's in the rubber "of these boot's) or they would not have deteriorated so quickly. Regards Bill |
