New Jersey Garage Sale – Not Model A But Still A Great Find

Not Model A’s but still thought this would be of interest to old car guys/gals.

I’m not suggesting this is typical of New Jersey garage sales, just goes to show you what ‘s still out there waiting to be discovered.

P.S. - "Dusty Old Bags" should have pulled the cars into the driveway and shot some still photos.
I'm half tempted to take a ride just to see what else is lurking in that garage. One never knows, do one?

That certainly beats the broken dishes and torn rags seen at Detroit area garage sales!!!
I would definitely make a trip there if I was anywhere near close by. You never known what else you'll find!!!

It appears curiosity got the best of me. Just returned home from a trip to this garage/estate sale where I hoped to find Model A parts/stuff. No Luck.

For those of you with deep pockets, the Rolls is priced at $55,000.00 and the Packard $40,000.00. One offer of $40,000.00 for the pair was flatly refused.

The pair of cars are worth about 45000. so they are out of line-but this is America.

Ronn - I spoke with the fellow in charge of the garage/estate/tag sale regarding the cars/prices.
Now don’t go shooting the messenger because I’m just repeating what I was told. He claims to have contacted a restoration shop in New Hampshire that once restored a Pebble Beach winning Rolls. Supposedly, the owner of the shop came up with the prices. I don’t know if he appraised the cars in person or via pictures.

What amazed me is, both cars are parked in a two car garage in a typical suburban ranch style house, in a typical suburban neighborhood. They both have New Jersey “QQ” (historical) license plates and appear to have been sitting for a very long time. The owner passed away some time ago (several years I think) so the cars are being sold for/by his widow. To my eye, the Rolls is the better of the two. It appears to be “almost” complete but needs restoration. If one had a big set of you know what’s, it’s possible the car could be started and maybe driven. Probably a very bad idea.
The Packard is also in need of restoration.

I'm relatively sure you will hear back from the Dusty's later today or after the sale ends tomorrow.

Is that a 1928 Packard 443? The louvered hood may make it an earlier car. I'd buy that one over the Rolls. Bob

I believe the Packard is a 1929 640. The 640s had a different belt line than the smaller 633s which more closely resembled the larger 645s. You don't see a lot of these 640s. It could be a 1928 443 that was updated with 1929 parts (hood, radiator, lamps, etc) but I don't think so from what I can see in the photos.

Here's a couple of other 1929 640 Phaeton. The louvered hood was standard and the opening door hood was an extra. Three wheel types were available: wood, wire and disc. Most were fitted with wire wheels.

There was a Model A part at this sale....
Look real closely at the Flicker photo showing the driver's side engine compartment on the Packard. I believe that's a Model A horn without the rear cover attached towards the bottom of the engine!

The Packard looks to be about 1926 to me and the headlights on the rolls appear to be incorrect. Should be drum lights. I stand by my estimate. The Packards of that year are less desireable then the Rolls. Very early Packards are worth a fortune and then their value starts in 1929 again. Mid and early twenties Packards aren't all that collectible. Same with the Pierce Arrows....

The cars are listed in the estate sale ad as 1929's with no mention of model name or number.
As witnessed by the "QQ" (historical) license plates, both cars are registered with the NJ DMV so they must have a valid title and registration. In all likelihood, the Dusty Old Bags determined the year of manufacture from the titles. Whether that information is accurate or not is anybody's guess.

When it comes to big classic cars I can be counted as one of those guys that would love to own one some day. So, until lady lottery comes my way, I’ll just continue to drool over them (not on them) at car shows etal.
In regard to the Packard and Rolls, I defer to the experts when it comes to determining condition etc. I will say this however, if one of those cars where a Model A Town Car, and it was in similar condition to the rolls with "reasonable" price tag, it would be parked in my garage as we speak.

Timothy, if that rolls is rough, your buddy ought to buy a restored car.
While the cost of restoring a rolls is crazy, that car just ain't that bad. Have seen 5x worse resurrected.
Could have that baby running and driving in a day!

Only 75000.00 and it is yours. Just an incredibly rough body, missing much, on the wrong chassis....

Bob - Several years ago I attended a dispersal auction of a well know New Jersey car collector. The collection consisted primarily of un-restored open top cars. Included in the sale was a Packard once owned by tobacco heiress Doris Duke. In my estimation, the condition of this car was as close as you can get to being a “parts car’. Granted, the car did have provenance a la Miss Duke but the hammer price of $80,000, did not include the auctioneers vig and a non refundable $100.00 bidder fee, was a bit much. I can only imagine what kind of numbers the rolls and Packard would have fetched at this auction.
