Hi all, I am going to replace my stock 2 blade fan with the new aluminum 2 blade one. My brother -in law is going to help me. The car was restored in '09 and only has 1,200 mi. since the restore. My question is the removal of the hood. I think I'll have my wife help me take it off the day before we work on it to save time. Is there a certain method of removing it? Which bolts should I take off first the two front ones by the radiator or the rear ones or doesn't it matter? Second should I lay the hood down on the blanket on end or the way it sits on the car? I'm hoping the job won't take too long and I am also a little worried about tilting the top of the radiator front to make room to get out the fan. This will be the first time I ever did this and I just want to be sure we do it right. thanks, Jim

on our 28 I just took out the 2 screws that holds the rear hinge and lifted it off it would be nice to have a helper!

I was told when I replaced my 4 blade fan with an aluminum 2 blade, that one of the advantages was that you could remove the water pump/fan assembly without moving the radiator...

But protect the radiator with cardboard in any case..

I also changed out the water pump studs with those look-alike bolts that come out in one piece...you might check yours. They also make it easier to remove the pump.

Two screws above the coil and the rear hinge will come off as mentioned...

The hood is surprisingly heavy and a little squirmy so help is a good idea.

I set mine on end just to keep from distorting it any more....

Make sure the two tapers match. The fan hub and the shaft. If it wobbles, it will fail and ruin your whole day.

Thanks for the help guys. I do have the changed water pump bolts so that should help I guess. I will try and use cardboard for the radiator. Jim

You can remove the upper radiator hose and loosen the radiator. It will then 'lean' forward for better clearance.

Use sealer on the r/s passenger side upper waterpump bolt... it goes into the water jacket as it is not a blind hole like the other 3..

once you have the water pump off the next trick is to get the fan blade off the pump shaft. Don't hammer on the end of the shaft as you will mushroom it. You can make a simple tool. Go to your local hardware store and purchase a bolt a nominal two inches long that has the same thread size as the pump shaft. Also buy two hex nuts. Remove the castle nut from the end of the pump and screw one of the nuts on to the shaft half way. Screw the bolt into the other half so that the bolt is up against the end of the pump shaft. Use the second nut to lock the first in place. Sit in a chair and place the fan across your knees so that the pump is hanging free and briskly tap the end of the bolt with a hammer. Most of the suppliers sell a similar tool.
