I have a cut out switch mounted on the trans top for my Leycock Overdrive. I drilled and tapped a hole at an angle on the top rear of the passenger side shift rail shaft housing. The angle needs to be high enough to clear the cross member and low enough to clear the floor board. The switch has a plunger on the bottom. It is engaged when the shift rail shaft is in the reverse position and meets and engages the plunger. In my case, it is wired to close (kill) the Overdrive solenoid when in reverse. It can be wired to open a circuit as well.

After the report of the latest accitdent on I-90
Where the car was rear ended, I'm considering putting a strobe light on the rear of the car.
As mentioned above, there is no approval needed when it comes to safety.
I've had my car less than 2 years and have put a lot of miles on it. Hoping to drive across country in the next few years.

Hey Tom that could have been me except it was in Nebraska Back in high school a buddy and me were going coyote hunting one night and ran into thick fog. He hung out the passenger window shining a flash light on the white line along the pavement edge and told me to go left or right.

Should have stayed home.

Whew, reading back it seems I am not the first to do this. Or maybe I am the first to make it for this application.

Well, no matter, I will still get this done since I want to!

I have a strobe light on my third brake light on my Town Sedan. Third brake light is mounted on top of spare tire. Flashes then goes solid. Adjustable. Super Brite RED LED's.

I have a F150 4-speed so the trans already has a backup light switch. I found some extremely bright led lights that look like bolts. Just had to open the holes in the license plate up a little bit and then sneak the wires down under the light bracket.

I found them on EBay just search for
12V 9W 18mm Eagle Eye White Led Light Bulbs Car Tail Backup DRL lights

They are now available in 15W. These are 12 volt bulbs
With 2 on each plate they really light up the area behind me.

I was thinking about something that would strobe all the time, not just when break lights were applied.
In cases like the couple that were rear ended on an interstate highway by someone not paying attention.
I usually bring up the rear on club tours as well.

It's in the transmission, automatically comes on when in Reverse.

Hint: (I have a Tremec 4-speed OD Transmission)

I set up a removable amber strobe to use on the rear of my truck for the same purpose. Talked with several law officers afterwards and found the majority of them would ticket me for doing so. I switched over to using two extra large flashers that I mount when I'm going to be on roadways where the speed limit is 55 or better.
Us AA owners always have to worry about someone driving up our tail pipes.

Rich Little (Bakersfield CA) who does the Volvo overdrive conversions, has the reverse lockout switch like Dick in post #20 talks about. About 6 cars in our club have this switch installed in their transmission towers.

Sweet, I think I will stick to just drilling and tapping a hole.

I also have the f-150 and never thought about how easy that it would be to add the back up lights until your post. Much appreciated, what a treasure this site is!

I asked our local district state police and they well its technically illegal but your more of a hazard on the road without some type of flashing/strobing amber light than with it. He said he nor any of his officers would ever pull me over for it BUT they wouldnt write a letter saying it was OK either...

So the way i see it your better off with flashing lights and potentially a ticket (judge would probably throw it out if it got that far) than the other option of no ticket but get a special box in the ground...
