V-J Day
How many here can remember V-J day, 9/12/1945. I don't remember it as well as I do V-E day, cannon fire over Lake Hopatcong, NJ.

Re: V-J Day
I remember the event well, I had just forgotten that today is the anniversary of the day it occurred. The USA and its allies won an amazing victory. Could we ever do it again????. Lets hope we never have to attempt it again.

Re: V-J Day
Lawson, I'm not old enough to remember it, but I'm a WWII historian. NO, we could never gear up and build the thousands of materials required in a war. Just think of Ford, GM, Chrysler and all the other smaller companies that just shut down their production line and started manufacturing for the war effort. We simply do not have the capabilities of producing what it took to win WWII in this country any longer, sad.

Re: V-J Day
I wasn’t born for 2 + years but my Dad did. He was a First Looie at Camp Roberts, CA with the 20th Armored Division (just returned from Europe) and on their way to the invasion of Japan. Lucky for me, the war was over and my brother wasn’t an only child! I saw the battleship Missouri many times while it was in Bremerton, WA. The armistice was signed on her decks in Tokyo Harbor.
If we get into it with China, we will both fire all we have at each other and you should hope for a direct hit, radiation sickness is not on my prescription list! |

as well as WW1. FDR & Churchill, what would the history books look like without their leadership.(The 12/8/41 FDR speech I never tire of, (using his nodding head for exclamation points.) The Japanese were right in their assumption; to wit, We have awakened a sleeping giant." *** Last edited by highbeams; 09-03-2022 at 12:47 PM. |

Re: V-J Day
Actually, I believe the "big one" quote came from Herbert T. Gillis (Dobie's dad), played by veteran character actor Frank Faylen.
