Default B pillar brace on 40 Merc tub

We are still working on seat belts for my '40 Merc 4door convertible sedan.

Removing the front seat and looking at the base of the pillar, I see a metal (maybe cast iron) "L" bracket with arms about 6 inches up and 6 inches toward the center of the car. One bracket one each side There is an empty hole (about 1/2" diameter on the floor end. No bolt to the floor. Should there be a bolt there? The bracket seems tight i place.
Thanks.

That hole is there and goes thru the floor , I would put a bolt that corresponds...wouldn't hurt.

Clem, I have witnessed that hole in numerous '40 Fords as well and have never figured out what it was meant for. During restoration(s) I eliminate it.

I have my front seat installed so I can't see the brace. It is located roughly 6 inches aft of the rear seat mount. That mount goes thru a reinforcement plate with has 2 big holes. I think the more forward hole is an alternate location for the seat mount. Dunno.

I have put hole covers over the big holes. I see no other holes.
