I have a rebuilt Touring motor with a pretty good oil leak behind the crank pulley. I think it has a modern seal installed. My question is can the seal be replaced with the engine in the car. 600 miles on the engine.

Yes, you can remove the timing cover and oil pan, then install the GOOD original style rope seal and smear grease on the rope seal after it's in place in the groove, then reinstall the cover and pan.

How long ago was it rebuilt? I would call the rebuilder and ask him what should be done first before taking things apart. Doing so might void warranty from the rebuilder.

And this one of those areas of the motor which can benefit from generous application of Permatex No. 2 on assembly. One can "butter" the areas to either side of the crank at the juncture between oil pan and block and make up for any separation caused by "compressing" the rope type seal creating minute pan distortion at the juncture.

What you may be seeing may not be a seal leak but rather the pan sitting "proud"of the block and leaving a sliver shaped gap unsealed. Permatex to the rescue!
