Re: brake master cylinder cap removal
are you talking about a cap with the square boss on top? If so try using a short piece of square tubing.

Re: brake master cylinder cap removal
It'll come off with a little persuasion. Tap the cap gently with a light hammer several times. Then use a good adjustable, tapping it back & forth as well. If the cap's really buggered up already, use a vice grip. If it were mine, I'd replace the old single with a dual anyway. Jack E/NJ

Re: brake master cylinder cap removal
Hijack - The master cylinder cap removal problem may be related to a moon phase as I'm having the same difficulty on my '50 Merc. See photo. Persuasion didn't work for me cap. Not fowl language either.
Previous owner/servicers during the last 67 years have rounded the square cap completely which speaks more to how difficult it is to access than to their expertise. (Yes, I am kind today) There just isn't enough room for me to properly vise grip it or pipe wrench it and I don't want to join those who went before me and remove even more metal. So I'm going to order a new master cylinder as my answer to "How to get cap off?" In future, given the cap is really a bit inaccessible, I shall obtain a piece of square tubing as FordWife suggested above and avoid the recurrence 50 years into the future of another rounded square. Anyone want to persuade me into the worth of buying a dual chamber master cylinder while I'm changing out the old one? Last edited by Paul Bennett; 05-04-2017 at 01:13 AM. |

Re: brake master cylinder cap removal
The '40 coupe original MC takes a 1 & 1/8 Socket. Mine was a little snug also, but came right off after a little effort.

Re: brake master cylinder cap removal
The square tubing method works well unless the cap is hopelessly seized as mine was on the 52 Merc. Good accessibility and I was able to use an assortment of wrenches, sockets and finally pipe wrench. At some point a piece broke right out of the cap. I had been pretty sure I was going to need a new master cylinder and after that I had no doubt. I never did get that broken cap out of the old cylinder.
