Default AA transmission in an A

Help! Has anyone reading this ever put a "AA" 4 speed transmission in an "A"? My "AA" transmission, bell housing, special adapter, and universal joint are about 1" overall longer than the stock "A" setup. What am I doing wrong? Were their more than one type of "AA" transmission? Mine says 2-10-30 on it. Is it possible that the rear end can be pushed back the 1" without damaging the rear spring and shackles? I know the motor isn't about to move forward. Someone please help!
