Default plugs look black

My spark plugs look black indicating a rich condition. Problem is that if I lean it out using the GAV it doesn't run good. Loses power. The GAV is about 5/8 open which is where the carb builder set it up to be. It idles decent but doesn't have loads of power. This is the only A I've driven so the power may be normal. Based on my vagueness does anyone have any tips?

Maybe you have too cold a plug. I recently changed to the repro 3X and it made my very stock engine run better. The previous plug was too cold.

There is also an air bleed (fuel / air ratio) adjustment on the carb..could that be set to rich?
Agree with the 3X plug statement as far as being the best for most cars. Yes they are slightly more expensive but so what they perform and look the best

What Dick sez...

Keep an eye on Amazon.com. I got a set for $18.99 per back in January. Manufacturer #429.
