You will not be able to connect you closed drive line transmission to your open drive line rear end. To do this successfully you will have to use a 1942-47 pickup truck trans mission which is designed for an open drive line. Down side to this is that you will have to modify the rear transmission mount.

If he already has a 9" rear end, he's halfway there. Any 42-51 pickup truck 3 speed trans will give him that "39" toploader trans but equipped for the open driveshaft. Or he can buy the parts needed to convert his actual 39 gearbox to open drive (ie: mainshaft and rear bearing retainer/rear support with speedometer drive gears). He'll have to have a driveshaft made up. The front yoke is available from Coleman Racing Products in Michigan (their 1310 series). Plus a minor (?) modification to the frame center support to change from the 10" wide spacing to the 8" wide spacing of the open drive rear support.

You might want to look for a later 3 speed that is fully synchronized and modified with a Jeep top shifter.

Be careful, the open drive mainshaft from a 1951 or 1952 truck light duty 3-speed WILL NOT interchange with the gears from a 1939-1950 trans. If you use ALL the gears and mainshaft from a 1951-52 side-shift, they can be installed in a floor shift case.

If you want to go back to a stock 3 speed trans, would it be worth considering going back to a stock rearend too?

Mart.
