Default Front Oil Seal

I have to remove the pan on my 1939 221 engine to clean it out and repaint it. I was thinking of replacing the front oil seal with a newer one piece modern one. #1, What one piece seal would be the proper replacement and #2, Is it fruitless to replace the rope seal with something that may be no better? TIA

The one I like is the rubber encased one that Speedway sells, probably others sell it. Walt Dupont gave me a heads up on this one while I was putting my 59AB together, little red silicone sealer on it and it fits snug and centers up real well. No leaks since.

Yeah I heard that a one piece works nice. The silicone sealer is a must from what I understand. I wish I would have done it to my baby.

So... any special instructions regarding the timing gear cover? Does the pan and cover have to go on & off together or what?

Yes, you must install the seal in the front cover then install on the engine. Walt
