You have to first find out if you have a grounded solenoid or an insulated solenoid, if you have a grounded solenoid you put 12 volts to the small 10/32 terminal on the solenoid from the starter button or ignition switch, if you have a insulated solenoid your starter button must be grounded on the dash and the wire from the button goes to the 10/32 terminal on the solenoid,

Like HD said you need to know which one you have.

You can use an ohm meter (ohm range on a voltmeter). An original type will show continuity between the battery post on the solenoid and the small starter terminal. If this is what you have, the battery connects to the battery terminal on the solenoid. The starter connects to the other large terminal, and the smaller starter terminal connects to a pushbutton on the dash. Pressing the button provides a ground to the solenoid, which energizes it.

The other style of solenoid will have continuity between the small terminal and the case of the solenoid. With this style the starter terminal connects to a pushbutton that provides power to energize the solenoid.

The solenoid is a switch. A pass through voltage charge that activates a "plunger" with opposite charge. +/-

No procedure. It doesn't care what end get's hooked up and when. Not like a voltage regulator.

The button completes the circuit. Adding the - on a + ground system. Technically it will work either way to polarity. On a solenoid.

Same system up to the 70s, except for a 4th pole around the 50s for direct coil voltage override on starting. Same it is only active when the circuit is complete and then is off once the key are start button is released.

If you have a solenoid that is not isolated... why Guess I don't know. I remember hopping my 70 dodge swinger with a screwdriver off a ground and the starter post.

Finely back at my computer. Ford switched from ground activated starter solenoids to power activated around 1956 when they changed to 12v systems. Attached is a diagram and photo of a 6v solenoid, the terminal that the battery connects to is important on these and should be marked. The second diagram is of a 12v solenoid Ford used after 1956. Problem is, there are several different styles (different wiring requirements) of both the 6v and 12v solenoids that look very similar to the OEM ones, so best to check and see what you have.
