How to install perch pins
Hello, I wanted to ask how to properly install perch pins in a model a axle?
Should I heat up the axle with a torch and use dry ice on the perch pins for a tight fit? Or is it ok if the perch pins slide in with grease? I dont know if they should have a tight fit or a looser fit? Also has anyone used model a spindles and arms on a dropped a axle? If I heat it and bend it down? thank you guys!! I also have a cartouche cover and padding and have been trying to find help on best way to install the padding and cover on my pickup seat with hog rings thank you |

Re: How to install perch pins
worn balls were just discussed here. Search. Many of us just MIG up the worn areas and use a die grinder, a file, or a roloc disc on a right angle die grinder, or all of the above, to round them off.
If you drill out the old ones (I would personally not do that) the new ones need to be welded in so that precludes any grease under any circumstances. Better still since original or repop original shocks hardly do anything at all (IMO i don't wanna hear it), just install Ken Davis modern shock kit. My rear end has never been so stable over bumps, RR tracks, etc

Re: How to install perch pins
Pins should be snug. You do not want them to move or eventually they will wear the surface where they bear on the Axle. I use a little antiseize but that can aggrivate movement if the pins aren't tight. As for arms good info on the HAMB. What arms to use & what mods are needed depend on amount of axle drop and other things. Good luck with your project. Tim

Re: How to install perch pins
I'm assuming (I know) that you're running hydraulic brakes with the dropped axle as I've heard the brake rods rub on "something" if using a dropped axle. No experience with the perch pins but would think they need to be tight.

Re: How to install perch pins
A few guys on the hamb have run mechancial brakes on dropped axles. The easiest way to do it is by using 32-34 perch pins. Every model A axle I have ever removed the perch pins from was a snug fit.

Re: How to install perch pins
Thank you gus again! The pins im referring to are the perch pins that hold the
Wishbone in the axle and that the front spring bolts to and the shock attaches to. Would like to put the dropped axle together using model a spring Reverse eye, model a perch pins, model a king pins and spindles and stock wishbones. Hydraulic brakes yes, but. Try and run model a steering arms/spindles And drop the steering arm? Will use model a steering box as well |

Re: How to install perch pins
OK, I guess you mean the shaft of the perch. (have not heard of that threaded shaft as a 'pin'). If so, ignore my previous answer.
They need to be fairly tight, BUT they are tapered and the weight of the car will soon enough drive them into the axle so hard you will have trouble getting them out again
