Default Ford Parts Obsolete, Long Beach 1970 Catalog

In another thread, I mentioned that I used to go to Ford Parts Obsolete when it was in Los Angeles in the late 1960's and when it moved to Long Beach in the early 1970's.

You knew you were close when you looked down the road and saw the hallowed out Model T on the roof of the building (used in both locations).

Here is a picture of the 1970 Long Beach catalog. This version of their catalog was my favorite. I loved the picture on the front. I could imagine myself as the young man with the smile on his face, standing next to the farmer.

Rebuilt short block engines were $199.50 exchange
Rebuilt transmissions were $58.50 exchange
Mallory distributors $24.95
354 R&P $48.50
muffler & exhaust clamps $9.50

Does anyone have a catalog from the Los Angeles days?

Regards, Neil

I used their catalogs a lot during the early sixties; but must have tossed them out some time ago.

Neil, I have a copy of that same catalog. Amazing how expensive parts were then relative to now (figuring in inflation) and so many of those were the dreaded "Argentina parts" to boot. Fun memories of going there with my Dad to buy parts for the Cabbie..

They used that same artwork on their catalogue when I started going there in '61.

No catalogue, but do has nos 3:54 R&P genny ford rear end from there in my '30 roadster ! I used to go into that place in la and just oogle, because that's about all I could do, not having the coin to buy some of those 'expensive' goodies ! Life is not fair , or I would have been able to get some of the rare stuff..common at the time !

Spent many hours there as a kid. Joe "Mac" and Gene Valdez were great people. I have many fond memories of staring at all the great car parts I could not afford!

I remember a guy in about 1962-3 had an "obsolete Ford" store on Burbank Blvd. It was handy, as I lived about a mile away. I also bought some from "Tiny" Snell. He had a little place near Alameda and Buena Vista, I think.

That engine rebuild that cost $200 in 1970 should only cost about $1200 today, according to the inflation calculator. The yellow Service Bulletins book would be about $42, based strictly on inflation.

The "another dealer in Burbank" was probably Bill Norton of Valley Obsolete.

The sign on his door said" Spend money and make a friend." "Step up or step back."

I did not remember, but looked and found a July '63 catalog.

I see I had made a note at top of their new Long Beach phone number.

Yes, Joe was human encyclopedia of stuff...Ford. He was near the end, when I visited him in Corona. He sat on a wheel chair in his garage and instructed me to 'rebuild' my '39 top loader. His ranch style home was a wonder, as when he left the business he took all the NOS trans parts and made his home into a very detailed place for trans parts...all id with parts numbers and super organized. A very nice man, indeed. RIP Joe !
