Default Need Information

I need to find directions to adjust valves, with the head on. The Les Andrews instructions say to start with piston 2-3/8" from top of cylinder. Can't do this with head still on! Can someone point me in the right direction?

With the timing pin in you can have that drop in at TDC on cylinder number 1. You now know the firing sequence and that number 1 cylinder has all valves closed. You can then take the valve adjusting recommended sequence and figure out were you are with those valves closed and you will see other valves fulled opened. Once you know where you are in the valve sequence then you can just start to adjust the two valves each time as you work around the valves open and closed sequence. Make any sense?

If your going to adjust the valves you will have to have the valve cover off. Then you can see when the valve you are working on opens and closes. The way I do it so I am certain the lifter is on the heal of the cam, I rotate the engine until the valve is fully open. Then rotate the crank one full turn and the valve will be right on the heal of the cam. There are other ways to do it but this works for me.

Do #1 when the pin is in the timing gear dimple and the others when the rotor button is pointing to that cylinder's contact in the distributor body. That's the easy way but the "Rule of 9" will work also.

I agree. Don't make it hard on yourself. Find #1 with the pin then follow the firing order using the rotor as your 'pointer' or just turn the crank 180° CW and set the next one.

Have you taken the valve cover off? And do you in fact have adjustable lifters?
Model A's did not come with adjustable lifters from the factory.
