Default Door hinge pins

Trying to remove model a door hinge pins. I do not want to damage the paint. I have tried drilling but the pins are made of a space age material or something. I have drilled pins in the past but I have not had a problem. I need input from those who have drilled these pins as in what kind of twist drill did you use etc. Thanks.

I believe there is a tool specific to that job. Synders has it. A few bucks to save hours of time. Win win for all.

You are pretty much on your own on this. The tools may or may not get it, the problem is that the pins may have a ridge worn between the post hinge and door hinge. Try lifting on the back of the door while you are doing whatever you are doing to possibly give the pin a straight shot. 12" Aircraft drill bits might help. Good luck.

Using the tool available from the vendors, you might be able to reduce or even eliminate scratched paint on the hinges by wrapping a couple layers of masking tape around them. Be sure to stick each piece of tape against your shirt before applying directly onto the painted surface. This removes some of the stickiness that would otherwise pull off old paint when removed. This is an old painter's trick and it works well.
Don't be surprised, though, if even the tool can't budge those ^%$&^(&*@ hinge pins! They can be a real P.I.T.A. to remove without using heat, which, of course, ruins the paint.

I have found that the referenced hinge pin tool is very good at getting out pins that would have come out anyway. Your experience may differ.

I tried everything on mine, bought the tool from Snyders and had them all out in 15 minutes

We used the tool for the pins and 2 things to note: The paint, in our case, got cracked on the top hinge surface of the outer barrel even with layers of tape. Also, use cardboard to protect door skin paint and use shortest tool pin as possible. Hammer, drift/ punch and other methods wouldn't concentrate the force to the pin as the tool did. As noted in (our) other posts, we drilled the worn hole in the center barrels and installed thin wall s.s. tubing sleeves reamed and drilled out to fit the barrel and new pins. This avoided drilling the outer barrels as some folks do. Also we mild tapered the pin end, very slightly filed the top serrations and dipped in 600 wt.oil for easier installation. Others find oversize pins or use roll pins if the barrel holes are worn, but only our center barrels were worn oval.

I am using a 4X rivet gun with some success. The problem is the pins I have are really hard and I cannot drill them. Is there a magic twist drill that will work?

You do realize there is only a 1/4in straight knurl at the top of these pins?

A simple Search would show you a tool to remove them.
