1951 Mercamatic

We drive a 1951 Mercury with the original Mercamatic tranmission. Recently developed a small fluid leak. My questions are what modern fluid type should I be using,and what is proper way to check fluid level? Is it like a modern car, running with transmission in park or some other procedure? Also a recomendation for a tranmission stop leak. Thanks, This forum has helped me keep my flatheads running for at least 15 years.

The old Whale Oil additive ATFs like type A were superseded a long time ago. Ford Type F, as was previously mentioned, is the direct replacement for the obsolete type A. If it still has type A in there, it should be completely drained before adding a different ATF to the mix.

Where does your leak seem to be coming from? Stop leaks may work on more modern transmissions but the old ones have different materials in the clutches. I'd avoid using any stop leak until an old timer transmission man confirmed that it would be OK. These units can leak from the front pump, converter housing, rear pump, and the rear sleeve plus some of the interconnect tubes. Some leaks will cause problems with function and some are just leaks from old seals & gaskets.
