You might try contacting Allen Lepore of A&L Parts. Rather than telephone, you could write them at PO Box 301, Canton CT 06019 or if you wish to telephone their # is 860-693-0112 . The quality of their products is excellent

Let us know if you find one sans plate bracket.

I wouldn't mind adding a RH light to my own '28, but don't fancy paying over $100 for a light, then taking a hacksaw to it...

Bratton's has drum tailight shells with and without license plate glass openings.

How about the back plate / bracket ? I 've only seen them with the license mounting straps.

I noticed that your son's car appears to be using a later style step plate mounting bracket that mounts on the bumper extension. At least the earlier '28 models used a forged step plate bracket that used the same mounting bolts as the rear fender brace (and attached on the inside of the rear subrail), the result being that the step plate was essentially only slightly removed from the rear of the body. Although the right hand tail light asemblies can be mounted to the rear cross rail if you are using the later type of step plate mounting, they will not fit if you ever intend to use the earlier forged step plate bracket. Just "food for thought".

Good luck --

thanks for replies ,the car is a bit of a bitser so its got various parts off various models ,might just have to run the Cal. plate on the left as a vanity when we do the right hand light and bracket ,my tourer in the avatar had a U.S Virgin Islands plate on the left bracket heard someone comment on it that we must be on holidays from there as they must not have seen the local plate on the other side ,,actually i still have the Virgin Island plate so i should hand it down,,,wish i still had the tourer,,,

I don't know anyone that makes them, but I'm sure an original backing plate/bracket could be modified to accomplish what you want to do. In fact, I am planning to do this on my phaeton.

Here's a photo of a car that was for sale on eBay several years ago - I saved it because of the RH tail lamp that he had installed.

Looks like he just cut the license plate straps off the RH tail-light backing plate.

But then, it appears to be a rod, so probably money was not an object.

I have installed two right hand drum tail light assemblies on the '28 bodies - a coupe and a roadster - and found it not much more than an afternoon's job. The parts came from Bratton's (link below) and although I did not remove the license plate bracket, it is certainly not a difficult job to cut it off. In both cases, the owner opted to display both the Illinois antique plate and a vintage plate. I was pleased with the quality of the parts.

The most difficult step of the installation was getting the lock washer and nut on the inboard attach (to the body) bolt.

So, you buy the drum tailight kit for the Right Side for $116, and have to cut the plate straps off, AND buy a license-light-less housing for another $24.95 to get a plain RH stop and tail w/o license bracket or light...

Wish there was a ready-made version for the same $116.

I guess it just pains me to spend three figures on a part, and have to take a hacksaw to it....

The trick will be to drill and mount the right stalk to body.

It is a sealed section.

I ended up drilling a 3/4 inch hole in middle of the triangle of the 3 mounting holes and making up a caged nut plate to slip inside.

Looks and works good.

I am the same, have 2 license brackets now , so will either find a novelty USA plate, or make a board with the car's description on it.

Or maybe cut off the license ears if I change my mind.
