Default ‘35 Ford Consensus for power steering

Hi all! Which is the best power steering conversion for the ‘35? Are kits available?

put the later steering box, it feels like power steering according to the 35 box.

I assume you mean the '37 to '48 design?

Tony ..... You actually want to use a '37-'39 steering box/column assembly
because the lower end is set-up to be able to duplicate your headlight switch situation.

'37-'39 Steering Box with headlight switch BELOW!

This is the difference between your '35 box (on right) and a '37-'39 box. Totally different internals, and BY FAR the most reasonable route to take for what you want.

The difference between steering box frame mounting brackets BELOW ('35-'36 on LEFT).

I did this ('37 swap) on my '36 about 30 years ago, and it's an easy and effective upgrade.

Actually the '37-40 Ford steering gear assembly is a direct swap using the '37-40 frame mount and a 21-A 3590-3 015 (47 Ford) pitman arm works like adding power-steering.
The only problem with the '40 gear box is it does not have the feature to attach the early light switch to the bottom of the gear assembly.
The '41-48 steering gear assembly is to long for the '35 and later cars.
I converted my '36 to "40 steering gears in 1955. I have a column shift trans in my car so I used the '40 column assembly.

Once again, I caution you that "21A-3590" Pitman arm is NOT 1940 Ford! "21A-" designates 1942-1948 Ford in this case. 1937-'40 Pitman arm would be "78-3590"!

Coop is right that I made an error in my description of the 21A pitman arm, I have corrected my earlier posting from '40 to '47...
Coop had pointed out my mistake many months ago following an earlier comment on the steering gear conversion in my car.
To recap my earlier comments about using '37-40 steering gears in a '36 Ford;
When I originally converted my '36 to '40 steering gears I used a '36 pitmam arm that hung down quite low under the car, I then switched to the '40 pitman arm, which also hung down quite low, very unsightly when viewed from the side of the car.
I drove the '36 from 1955 to 1963 with the 40 pitman, always on the lookout for a more suitable pitman.
In 1963 my brother bought a very nice dead stock '36 Ford pickup, he wanted to use the truck for daily transportation. The 21 stud engine was about dead and the brakes/running gear was warn out. We purchased a '47 Ford, harvested the running gear and had the 59 AB engine rebuilt.
My brother drove the '36 for many years, finally trading it to a man that had a very nice '37 Fordor, which my brother still has.
I kept the wide five wheels from the pickup, they were KH 5-36, still have them. I put the 21-A '47 pitman arm on my 36, it fit perfectly, solving the problem of an arm that hung down below the car.

Thx all. Will take into consideration. Obviously the longer pitman arm gives a bit more leverage / Mechanical advantage.
Sorry I didn’t get back sooner, I got tangled up for a couple weeks w getting a mortgage & they made me crazy!
I copied the johndee138 reply 7 instructions.
Thx again

The longer pitman will give less mech advantage to the guy turning the steering wheel. Unfortunately we're on the wrong end of that lever!
