Default 1929 Model A backfiring

We got the timing set dead on, new set of points, purrs like a kitten. A couple days later started backfiring, don't idle good at all and when you acccelarate it wants to backfire bad. It has a Tilly Model x carb, I removed it everything looked good except the flange to the manifold was warped, got it flat by sanding on a marble slab with sand paper, the top and bottom half of carb was warped got it flat by sanding on the marble slab, except the top half. I removed all parts and gaskets and replaced screws and three clamps, caught my wife gone, placed it in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 min. let cool. Put it back togather and it is still backfiring. With the engine running and spraying either in the front of the manifold near no. 1, engine seem to smooth out, must be manifold leak don't you all think, new gaskets and be sure mating surfaces of manifold are a good flat surface. When you accelrate it will backfire so bad it don't have power to pull itself. Am I on the right road, any help will help...

It sounds like it's running lean. Maybe sucking air somewhere, or maybe you got some grit in the gas that's obstructing your carb jets. I don't know from Tillotsons, only Zeniths, but a manifold leak is a good place to start.

It could be a bad condenser too, or old ethanol gas.

The Dog & I are at the door, we can't hear it, goose it two or three times so we can diagnose it. Bill W.
