5sp, V8 clutch and Flywheel
i just purchased the 5 sp tranny (s10) from AutoRestoration. the kit comes with a clutch but i wanted to go with the V8 clutch and lightened flywheel. does anyone know if this is possible ? a friend told us that after doing the fly&clutch from the v8 we would have idling problems ? is this true ? as anyone had experience with this..
also by doing the s10 tranny has anyone had any troubles with the rear end twisting ? would it be best to upgrade the radius rods with the open drive shaft ? any input would be greatly appreciated. |

Re: 5sp, V8 clutch and Flywheel
I have a V-8 clutch and lightened flywheel in my coupe and have no idling problems. As far as the s10 installation I've heard that the rear radius rods should be beefed up for the open drive.

Re: 5sp, V8 clutch and Flywheel
Simplest way to reinforce the radius arms is to weld a 1/4" x 1" piece of flat stock on edge along the weld seams. Been running this set up without issues for six years. I'm not sure I'd run a V-8 clutch/flywheel setup as the stock setup is more than adequate. I would balance the flyweel, clutch and disk when you reassemble everything.

Re: 5sp, V8 clutch and Flywheel
I have sold and run probably a hundred lightened flywheel/clutch setups and have never had a complaint about idling problems. I have only had one complaint about a faulty pressure plate that was exchanged at my expense for shipping and one flywheel that was ground incorrectly and that was refunded the price of local regrind, never a problem about idle.

Re: 5sp, V8 clutch and Flywheel
You obviously have never done business with AutoRestoration! I might add that I'm running a B engine with an original CRAGAR head and it's probably 65 HP.
Here are some photos of how I modified the cross member. This makes it really easy to R&R the engine/transmission Last edited by denis4x4; 10-22-2012 at 09:57 AM. |

Re: 5sp, V8 clutch and Flywheel
I have sold a couple of flywheels to owners that were installing the GM tranny. I even put the sleeve on one of those owner's front bearing retainer. The only difference is the use of a 9" GM clutch disk. This disk was used in the 58-64 and later 6 cylinder full and intermediate chevys. All I have sold worked fine with all types of trannys, Ford or GM.

Re: 5sp, V8 clutch and Flywheel
Wow.....I'm impressed!..... Not one "This is not the forum for you try H.A.M.B." ......Not all cars or people building them are able to get back to the exact way the they came out of the factory or want too. That doesn't mean we don't appreciate the simple subtle design of an original styled Model A. If you have a reasonable answer which is productive then help. Model a Mike@ you are very lucky! You actually got a bunch of nice guys that aren't hung up on EXACT Authenticity! and it actually sounds like you got some decent advice which is what this site is really for. Thanks guys for RESTORING my faith in the users of this forum.
