Stopping a Model A, stopping a AA
I have never had the privilege of driving a car with mechanical brakes yet. Currently working on a 1930 AA project. I learned to drive on clunkers with worn out manual hydraulic brakes and have driven loaded trucks most of my adult life so I know about planning stops and leaving room.
It seems from what I read that the stock brakes on model A’s are adequate if properly serviced and adjusted once you are accustomed to them. Just read specs on the Fords and after the 1930 upgrade on the AA front axle the AA has more than double the brake surface of the A. Should be stoppable even with a load? I imagine getting used to amount of pedal travel on mechanical might be a little different? Any thoughts? |

Re: Stopping a Model A, stopping a AA
The stock brakes on an A are quite adequate if in good condition and correctly adjusted . I have locked up all four wheels when lunatics have misjudged my approaching speed and pulled out of a side road . My 31 AA truck has good brakes but I never ever had to do a crash stop I never feel unsafe driving it . I have a 29 AA with all new brakes and cast iron 11" front drums test drive shows all will lock up on a fairly hard surface but I have not tried it on black top . Ford knew you would need to push harder on the pedal in an AA truck that is why the pedal is heavier construction than a car .
